Mobile home fire kills Roswell woman on Lea Street

A mobile home fire at 4903 South Sea Street in Roswell early Tuesday morning left one woman dead. Fire officials say the victim, whose name was being withheld, was unable to escape from a back bedroom as smoke and heat filled the residence. Fire crews from Roswell and Chaves County extinguished the blaze after about 30 minutes. two residents escaped. No working smoke detectors were found in the home.

American held captive in Iraq pleads for life on video

Roy Hallums, 56, speaks with a gun to his head in a released video and appeals to Arab leaders to save his life. His captors are described as a resistance group. Hallums and Robert Tarangay, a Filipino, were seized November 1 from Baghdad’s Mansour district while working for a Saudi catering firm serving the Iraqi army. Three Iraqis and more than a dozen others die amid intense posturing and violence ahead of elections.

Military pension tax cut bill tabled in New Mexico House

The New Mexico House Taxation and Revenue Committee tabled House Bill 50 which would exempt military retiree pensions from state income tax. Chairman Rep. Donald Whitaker said tabling is standard for bills affecting revenue. Sponsor Rep. Ted Hobbs remained optimistic about eventual floor passage amid bipartisan support and Gov. Richardson push for a 50 percent exemption. Rep. Keith Gardner opposed the tabling, warning the bill could die without advancement.

Roswell Marine Returns Home After Brother's Death

Roswell Marine Lance Cpl. Nathan Thompson arrived home after fighting in Fallujah last November. His 26-year-old brother Thomas Driskell died in California after illnesses and a West Nile virus battle, with the family noting his courage and encouragement. Driskell died shortly before a Jan 20 burial in California.
