Defense chief sees no changes needed short of war

Secretary of Defense Wilson told Congress there is no need for major changes in U S armed forces unless war looms. He offered no new remarks on Red Chinese threats to Formosa, though the issue dominated background briefings with Adm Radford also slated. The House approved a war authority resolution backing actions to defend Formosa if necessary.

Hereford Breeders Show Set for Tomorrow at ENM State Fair

The 24th annual Southeastern New Mexico Hereford Breeders Association show and sale run tomorrow and Friday at the Eastern New Mexico State Fair sales ring. About 90 bulls and 20 females will be offered, with the show starting at 1 p.m. tomorrow and the sale at 12 30 p.m. Friday. Lunch will be served both days at the Fairgrounds by the DAV auxiliary.

Los Alamos Lab Names First State Senator Agnew

Harold Agnew, 33, of the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory Theoretical Division, was named the first state senator for Los Alamos County after Governor Simms signed emergency legislation. The unanimous County Commission selection followed the new law making Los Alamos the 40th state senate seat. Agnew also serves as Los Alamos County School Board president and is a County Democrat.

Soldier on leave jailed after Roswell stabbing incident

Eugene Tatum a 22 year old Fort Bliss soldier on terminal leave was sentenced to 60 days in the county jail for stabbing Roswell taxi driver Orvin Hanks during a fare dispute. Hanks required 13 stitches after the throat and shoulder wounds.

Quake Damages Wells in Long Beach Oil Field

An underground shift from an earthquake damaged oil wells in Long Beach California. Estimated losses exceed one million dollars with at least 12 wells owned by Signal Oil Co Hancock Oil Co and the Union Pacific Railroad out of commission. Redrilling costs run about eighty thousand dollars per well and downtime stretches from forty five to sixty days, cutting oil revenue.
