Santa Fe reports Gov. A W Hockenhull aims to save about 50000 dollars annually by creating a state purchasing supervisor. The supervisor would compare bids, centralize orders, and use a state warehouse to lower prices while ensuring fair competition among cities. He criticizes gifts by salesmen and travel for state buyers.
Washington reports the Treasury sold a billion dollars of government securities in a single day, with several billion more offered. Treasury Secretary Morgenthau notes open market and other powers may be used, but the initial sale was greatly oversubscribed. Roosevelt aims to borrow about 19 billion by June 30 as part of wartime financing.
Santa Fe reports discuss a front page Albuquerque Journal editorial accusing Associate Justice A L Zinn of delaying remittances from McKinley county while Chief Justice John C Watson and other justices conferenced. Gov. Hockenhull declined to seek a legislative probe, hoping Zinn will explain. Artesia New Mexico January 25 AP M W Evans member of the Eddy county cotton acreage reduction committee said local farmers must hurry to sign 1934 reduction contracts before the Farm Administration deadline Only about 120 of 400 farmers in the county have signed and the time limit expires January 31.
Beverly Hills columnist Will Rogers notes the daily shift of focus between Europe and Japan. He remarks on a resigned Japanese war secretary and the foreign minister Hirota, suggesting cautious views on peace and Russia before domestic concerns. He humorously warns of trying to look both ways at once.
In Hazard Kentucky Perry county officials investigated the lynching of Rex Scott. A masked mob took him from jail and hanged him to a beech tree in a Knott county graveyard. Three men Petie Carroll Lee Gibson and Andy Workman were arrested on murder warrants and James Collins held for questioning.
A disguised visitor overpowered Welfare Island Penitentiary and declared it the worst prison in the world. Commissioner Austin H. MacCormick uncovered gang rule, narcotics, and lavish privileges for two inmate leaders with illegal comforts and even a monogrammed stationery set.
Washington reports the House Rules Committee granted legislative preference to the Vinson treaty navy bill with plans to bring it to the floor tomorrow or Tuesday. Debate limited to three hours and open to amendments, amid Navy push for 660 more airplanes and a gradual rise to 2100 planes to meet fleet needs. Admiral Standley cited immediate needs and said aviation strength should rise from 1000 to 1660, a measure approved by the Navy Department for the President’s sanction.
A Roswell resident named Bob Crosby is noted in the February National Geographic article titled A Native Son's Rambles In Oregon. The piece, referencing the Pendleton Round-up, describes Crosby actively riding in the bucking championship of the world with a brassy announcer in a lively arena scene on page 119.
Shanghai reports reveal 216 people perished when the Chinese steamer Wei tung caught fire on the Yangtse river on January 21. The vessel exploded and sank within minutes. only 34 survived as passengers and crew leaped into the icy water to escape the blaze.
A group under Mrs. John B. Beers canvasses Roswell to sell tickets for the Birthday Ball for President Roosevelt to be held at Cahoon Armory next Tuesday night. Tickets may also be bought at the Chamber of Commerce. The event supports the Warm Springs Foundation endowment for infantile paralysis research, with a national radio program and a Roosevelt speech anticipated. Proceeds go entirely to the foundation as donations.
Police report an arrest in the Joyce Pruitt Co store robbery in Artesia. The suspect, a local resident, is not named. Entry occurred Saturday night via a roof hole. $1,400 in cash from the safe and women’s wearing apparel were stolen.
A county office statement by J. R. Thomas reports the 1934 cotton acre reduction campaign in Chaves County is underperformed after two weeks. The drive, required to end by January 31 under federal order, involved interviews with nearly all growers to urge cooperation and form of reduction.
Clinton P. Anderson New Mexico state treasurer denied a Santa Fe report that his commission on a self written million dollar bond was three thousand dollars. He predicted a remaining term commission near twelve hundred dollars and said profits from bonds for state agencies would be modest. He cited his long insurance career and claimed no abnormal business from holding office. He did not say if he spoke with Governor Hockenloh.
A single story and a half eight room frame house owned by Mrs. M. E. Haggerton burned at about one o clock this morning five miles south of Roswell on the Y O crossing road. Mrs. Haggerton and six children escaped with only the clothing on their backs. The fire started on the back porch and the cause is unknown. There was no insurance and the family was taken in by Dave Chesser after being awakened by son Jack Haggerton.
The Paso Freight Bureau and others won before the interstate commerce commission against rail rates on banana shipments from New Orleans and Galveston to Roswell, New Mexico, for February 1 to December 14, 1932. Railroads must compensate shippers at $1.26 per hundred pounds from New Orleans and $1.10 from Galveston, versus prior rates of $1.53 and $1.37 respectively.
M H Hunter of Roswell has been appointed supervising CWA engineer for New Mexico and left for Santa Fe to begin duties. The post is newly created and does not replace any existing staff.
Col D C Pearson and Claude Simpson spoke at Carlsbad Rotary yesterday noon on Rotary subjects. The program noted clubs attending included Reed Muikey Carl McNally and Logan Hunter with mention of Lia and other attendees.
A federal grand jury returned true bills charging Jaurette Hasker, former CWA purchasing department assistant, and Emily G Paddleford, a Hollywood political figure, with conspiring to defraud the federal government by forcing truck owners to pay tribute as part of alleged CWA irregularities in Los Angeles County.
John S. Powers, Roswell agent of Phillips Petroleum Company, returned last night from Amarillo where he attended a meeting of Philips officials.
