Two Roswell men charged in decades-old murder
Tony Gonzales of Roswell and Gonzalo Bonilla of Haltom City Texas face charges in the 1997 death of Edward Raymond Sanchez. Gonzales is charged with first degree murder while Bonilla faces a reduced charge after four felonies were dropped. Both men were released awaiting hearings with arraignment and preliminary hearing dates set.

Incumbent Mayor Dennis Kintigh and Del Jurney joined Natasha Mackey and Margaret Kennard in introducing candidates. Sergio Gonzalez was absent. A February 6 Candidate Forum at the Pueblo Auditorium invites all mayoral contenders and city councilors.

Roswell launches Angel Program to aid opioid addicts
The Roswell Angel Program, a prereferral effort to help those with opioid and related drug issues, was announced at a news conference led by Roswell Police Chief Phil Smith. The program, adopted from Gloucester Massachusetts, spots officers deputies and firefighters who reach out at five locations offering intake to Recovery Services of New Mexico. The aim is to prevent arrests by connecting people to help before court involvement.

Artesia Approves Aquatic Center Plan
