Seine River Falls After Flood In Paris Areas Still Flooded

The swollen Seine began to fall after peaking near 24 feet, keeping thousands of lowland farms and factory suburbs under water. Paris centers remain safe though several bridges closed. Notre Dame basement flooded but church intact as Moselle and Garonne rivers rise in eastern and southwest France.

Congress Okay to Be Asked on Evacuating Tachens

Vice Admiral Pride said President Eisenhower would ask Congress to approve evacuation of the Tachens by the U S 7th Fleet now at the ready The fleet includes carriers Essex Yorktown Kearsarge Wasp and Princeton with cruisers Pride noted the action would be a grave policy change and fought by Communist opposition remains possible The Nationalist navy would assist and the fleet could move quickly if ordered from Keelung Taiwan Formosa.

Moxey Will Talk Oil Issues At Chamber Breakfast

Fred Moxey executive secretary of the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association will discuss the present oil picture in southeastern New Mexico and related matters at the Chamber of Commerce breakfast Wednesday morning. About 50 reservations were made, with Tuesday noon as the deadline. R. G. Bird, newly elected Chamber president, will preside. The event runs 7:30 to 8:30 at Nickson Coffee Shop. reservations via Chamber at 3000. Attendance open to all interested.

Eisenhower seeks U S authority to use armed forces over Formosa

President Eisenhower asked Congress for authority to deploy U S forces if needed to secure Formosa and the Pescadores amid Red China aggression. Chou En Lai Accuses U S of Provoking Taiwan Crisis

Premier Chou En Lai charged the United States with escalating military actions after Red China seized Yikiangshan Island. He accused Washington of interfering in Taiwan's liberation and vowed China will decide its sovereignty without outside interference. The U S 7th Fleet and three aircraft carriers moved near Yikiangshan to aid evacuation of the Tachen Islands if ordered.

VFW District Parley Receives State Officers Addresses

Harold O'Brien of Los Alamos and Lloyd Gladin of Grants spoke to about 80 VFW officers delegates and auxiliary members at the Seventh District meeting held at Ingalls Memorial Home. Men Appointed Jury Commissioners Named by District Court

Warren R. Cobean former mayor and James A. Price both of Roswell and E O Moore of Dexter were appointed by the District Court as jury commissioners. They will meet at 9 a m January 31 to select from 850 names those qualified as jurors take the oath and deliver the list to the district clerk. The appointment order was filed Friday.

Fines Total 370 In Police Court

Fines totaling 370 were assessed today in Police Court across five cases. Three defendants were charged with intoxication, one with drunken driving, and one with leaving the scene of an accident and no driver license. Frances Gutierrez, 19, 1504 S Monroe Ave, was fined 175 for DWI LSA and NDL. Jessie L McCraw, 26, 807 W 10th St, was fined 150 for DWI.

NM Senate Leader Expects Primary for Delegates

Senate majority leader Sen. Murray Morgan says a bill substituting a presidential primary for the delegate convention system could pass both houses in New Mexico. He notes past federal aid proposals and recalls a vetoed 1953 measure while urging open primaries with limited delegate binding.
