MRSA is an antibiotic resistant germ found on skin or in the nose. Colonization affects about 0.8 percent of the U S population, with many carrying MRSA without symptoms. While not all colonized people get infections, MRSA can cause skin infections pneumonia or sepsis and leads to about 19 000 deaths annually, with roughly 14 percent linked to community infections.
The hospital will test admitted patients for MRSA with a nose swab at no extra cost to patients or insurers. If positive, patients are placed on contact precautions with staff wearing gowns and gloves to prevent spread. MRSA presence does not indicate infection, and more information is available online or from the Infection Control Department.
The Community Foundation of Chaves County hosts its third annual Benefit Concert at 6 30 p m today in ENMU Roswell Performing Arts Center. Local bands and singers perform classic rock R B country and Latin music with tickets 25 at the door. Proceeds support the foundation and United Way events follow with lunch on Monday.

On January 16 middle schools across the region competed in 23 events at New Mexico Tech Cloudcroft. Sidney Gutierrez Middle School A Team won first place to advance to the State Olympiad in Socorro on February 20 led by coach Jessica McGuire.
An 8 by 16 foot plot with seven bags of manure and mulch created excess nitrogen, yielding lush vegetative growth but no tomatoes or cucumbers. Dr. Curtis Smith advises stopping manure and nitrogen inputs this year, noting raspberries may need nitrogen while strawberries may be spring bearers or overbearing varieties.
