President Johnson’s inauguration day blended formality with warmth as he left a bullet proof car to greet four Southwest Texas State College banner bearers and addressed poverty and racial injustice. The State Corporation Commission denied Mountain States Tele phone and Telegraph Company a request for higher person to person rates to offset losses from reduced station to station calls. Lower station to station rates, approved earlier, take effect February 1 for night and Sunday calls. A request to end lower night person to person rates was deferred to August 1 for study.

New Mexico Senate Debates Judicial Reform Measure
A proposed constitutional amendment would abolish the justice of the peace system, create district and state supreme court judges, possibly add an intermediate appeals court, and form a judiciary commission. Landrum elected chairman of Southwestern Public Service Co board
Neely G. Landrum of Dallas was chosen chairman of the board of Southwestern Public Service Co at a directors meeting. He succeeds the late Herbert W. Nichols who led the board since 1942 and died on Dec. 3. Landrum has served on the board since 1944 and also chairs First Federal Savings and Loan Assn. Don D. Loden was elected to the board to fill the vacancy. All other officers were re elected, including board member Stanley Carper of Artesia.

Dr. Hubbard 85 Pioneer Doctor Dies in Dexter
Dr E J Hubbard aged 85 a veteran Chaves county physician who practiced in Dexter from 1912 to 1958 died after a heart attack at a local hospital. Funeral services set for Saturday at Ballard Chapel. He came to Dexter in 1911 and married Rose Graham in 1911 leaving four children. He was honored last year by the New Mexico Medical Society with the Robins Community Service Award.
