Burglars robbed the Broadway Liquor Store in Hobbs last night taking cash, a cash register, and merchandise valued at 750 dollars. Thieves also grabbed 12 quarts of wine plus vodka and gin from owner Harkey Smith.
In Washington this month the Pecos River Commission drafts groundwork for legislation to improve the Pecos drainage basin in New Mexico and Texas. The group outlines a two part project including 16 miles of river channelization north of Carlsbad and a 500000 dollar plan at Malaga Bend to divert and confine salt water springs away from the Pecos. Local lawmakers hope Congress acts this session.
The inter-American peace commission set up a neutral zone 18 miles long and six miles wide along the border to deter a widening conflict. 23 observers patrol the area while Costa Rican forces maneuver to flank rebels in the northwest as government troops advance from the south. The plan includes heavy U.S. participation with 35 Americans among 59 observers led by Col. Willie Lewis.
Plan for a tri county juvenile detention home near Artesia collapses as Eddy Lea and Chaves counties pursue separate measures. Eddy would consider a bond to fund an Eddy County center while Lea detains youths at the Provost Marshal building and Chaves uses its jail. Eddy counts only four male juveniles can be housed locally.
In Santa Fe Gov. John Simms backs a new five member Springer Boys School board to replace criticism over alleged mistreatment and questionable practices at the institution. The governor promises support for a strong board and a qualified superintendent while denying meddling or political strings in hiring.
Local weather report lists readings from 2 p m yesterday to 11 a m today with highs near 48 and a low near 25. Precipitation none in the 24 hours ending 11 a m today and month to date total a quarter inch. Forecast calls for mostly clear skies, continued strong winds tonight, and a rise in temperature tomorrow with highs about 54.
Russell G. Bird was chosen to lead the Roswell Chamber of Commerce for the year, becoming the first ranchman elected president in the 37 year history of the organization. The board also created new titles for staff, naming Claude Simpson executive vice president and Frank Kaufmann manager, as Homer Glover and others retired from the board.
New Mexico Military Institute plans a 3 p.m. regimental review to honor ten cadets of the college division led by Cadet Capt. Donald G. Nicholas of Dexter. The Friday program includes a 2 p.m. graduation in the Thom as Memorial lounge with degrees presented by Clarence Hinkle and oath administered by Col. M. P. Fritspold. Col. and Mrs. Ward host a 6:30 p.m. buffet for graduates and parents. the Sunday parade is not held due to mid year activities. Other graduates include James A. Bond Albuquerque Juan J. Senate minority leader Knowland told the Cicero Manufacturers' Assn that Red China holds “something over 800 other GIs” besides the 15 airmen they acknowledge. He cited Red propaganda, released POWs, and Pentagon reports to support the figure and urged UN action to secure release.
Senate leader urged the United States to set a firm line beyond which Communist aggression in Asia would not be tolerated. He warned that appeasement is dubious and warned that failure to act could shift the line of defense to Oregon if the Reds seize all of Asia. He warned that losing Formosa would outflank Japan, Okinawa, and the Philippines and move the first line of defense to the Pacific coast states Oregon Washington and California.
A northbound goose with two wings performed a perfect three point landing at Sec ond and Main in a test of a single wing parking. Patrolmen Hale and Guenther stopped the bird but it remains in police custody awaiting its owner.
A proposed three member liquor control commission with governor appointed members and two to six year terms would replace the state liquor director system. A full time executive director would be hired with a ten thousand dollar bond paid by the state and hearings on liquor violations could be delegated to the director. The measure coincides with other election bills introduced in the Legislature including repeal of direct primaries and purging voter lists every odd numbered year.
The Roswell Lions Club is 5283 feet of dimes short of a mile in the Mile of Dimes campaign for March of Dimes polio prevention. The booth at Tucker Brothers Shoe Store on Main Street collects dimes in a looping line aiming to reach a mile before week’s end.
Mike Gallegos announced in Santa Fe that Sam Osborn of Dexter is appointed license plate distributor for Chaves County effective immediately. Ernest Tucker becomes Roswell District Bureau of Revenue supervisor and sells his stake in Tucker Brothers Quality Shoe Store to his brother Lester Tucker who will take over next week.
Peiping broadcasts claim victory on Yikiangshan as 720 Nationalist guerrillas on the island are said wiped out. Red forces reportedly landed with 5500 troops backed by heavy artillery and naval air bombardment. Nationalist defense says 2000 Reds casualties.
The Communications Commission approves the assignment of KICA Inc license to Mae Strauss as chairwoman for 125000 dollars. The Clovis New Mexico station KICA is involved in the corporate change.

At least 10 were killed in clashes near Aurora Air Force Base as authorities arrest over 100 Communists and Arbenz supporters. Security tightens across the capital with a 10 pm curfew and press censorship orders.
