Santa Fe mayor: bill would promote discrimination against gays
At a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event Santa Fe Mayor Javier Gonzales criticized HB 55 saying it would promote discrimination against gays and lesbians by allowing businesses to refuse service based on religious beliefs. State Rep. David Gallegos and Rep. Nora Espinoza defend the measure, arguing it protects religious exercise while softening language to avoid abuse. Gonzales noted New Mexico faces constitutional questions and that Santa Fe has progressed but more work remains toward equal civil rights.
