Roswell residents cite government responsiveness as the top issue in a 150 person poll six weeks before the March 2 municipal election. Voters criticize political emphasis, trust in city government, and call for stronger animal code enforcement, while many support the new nuisance ordinance and growth controls.
The 1976 30 day session opens in Santa Fe with limited nonfinance topics. Gov. Apodaca aims to focus on emergency financial issues and basic budgeting while introducing his own general appropriations act for the first time.
President Ford plans a 9 PM EST State of the Union address to Congress highlighting continued but improved domestic and foreign challenges. He seeks a belt tightening budget of 394 billion, a 10 billion dollar tax cut, and aims for growth without inflation while pushing for Middle East peace and arms talks with the Soviet Union.
State officials discussed accelerating the phaseout of Villa Solano State Training School near Roswell. A five year plan was questioned as staff proposed relocating students to group homes at the Roswell Industrial Air Center while maintaining a nucleus of operations. No board action was taken. a full document on the five year plan is expected before the February meeting.
Mike Bush reports 359 homes and businesses in Roswell were burglarized in 1975 an average of nearly one per night. Only one marked for Operation Identification remained with minimal losses while others left marked items. Local insurance agents offer engraving pens and stickers to deter theft and aid recovery.
Parents of Roswell High School students are invited to a 7 p.m. Back to School Night program. They will meet in the RHS Little Theatre and follow a shortened schedule of their child’s classes. Abbreviated format and details provided by Principal Elgin Mallory.
