Iron-Lung Polio Victim Flown To Roswell In Military Plane
Mary S. Roberts, an iron lung polio patient since 1954, was flown to Walker Field Roswell from Houston by a Military Air Transport plane. She will stay with sister A D Exum and continues using a chest respirator and rocking bed provided by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. The Chaves County Polio Chapter arranged transport, equipment, and medical car support.

Police Seek Knife Wielder In Storeyard Stabbing
Police report Joe Silva was not yet captured. A warrant lists him as the suspect in a Saturday stabbing of Joe Rodriguez at Kessels Dry Goods Store. Rodriguez was wounded in the heart area and treated at St Mary's Hospital and released.

The search for Ralph Rainey, a 48 year old Santa Monica butcher slain by two bullets, intensified after his 1955 car was found abandoned in a Utah ravine. FBI in Salt Lake City seeks a red panel truck driver who picked up a hitchhiker near the car. A motorist in Tooele reported a well dressed man was dropped off nearby shortly after. Rainey was traveling from Los Angeles to Denver when killed. Blood blot was found on the front of his car.

In Roswell during the third week of the 1956 March of Dimes drive Burl Wilkerson announced final events. Til's Skateland will donate all proceeds January 18 to 20. Shamrock stations will give three cents per gallon on January 19 and 20. On January 21 the Roswell High School Chums Society will sell a Blue Crutch item and on January 22 a turkey shoot will be held at the NMMI rifle range for the March of Dimes.

Dog inheritance tax stumps U S government in Auburn
Franklin Tuttle, Placer County inheritance tax appraiser, ruled that a local dog receiving a $250 bequest from Katherine Richter must pay $14 in inheritance taxes to the U S government. The will directed the funds toward finding the dog a suitable home.

A Cities Service Oil Co. tanker loaded with 130 000 barrels of fuel exploded at the Calcasieu River dock in Lake Charles Louisiana. 41 crew on board 25 reported missing captain John Rugling among the missing. The blast sparked fires at two loading stations and left the ship a flaming hulk after six hours of loading at 20 000 barrels per hour.

PVACD Approves Well Change To Battle Salt Near Roswell
PVACD backed a recommendation to the State Engineer to permit drilling a shallow well five to six miles southeast of Roswell to replace a salty artesian well. The board urged cautious steps and suggested up to six wells in the salt-infiltration area on the Roswell basin north and east flanks. Thomas E. Vandiver, new PVACD director from district five, took his oath and attended first meeting. Officers re-elected: Guy M. Rowe as president, Howard Menefee as vice president, John Allen Phinizy as secretary treasurer.

Two Die As New Mexico Highway Toll Hits Ten
Two persons die in separate auto crashes raising New Mexico's highway deaths for the year to 10. Minette Lopez 26 of Towoac Colo was killed when her car blew a front tire on U S 666 and overturned near Shiprock. Three others from Saw Mill Ariz were injured. Buster Mars Gray 33 of Grants died when his car left a bridge in Grants and plunged down a 250 foot embankment. Police report the year to date toll now 10 versus 16 at this date last year.

United Fund plan approved by county groups
