Navy Constellation Crashes Off Newfoundland. 13 Missing
A United States Navy four engine Constellation crashed in the Atlantic off southwest Newfoundland. The plane had departed Harmon Air Force Base and was en route to Patuxent River NAS Maryland. 13 aboard are missing after two engine failures. Search planes sighted yellow life rafts but found no occupants.

Elderly Artesia Woman Stricken in Gas Filled Trailer
Funeral arrangements are pending for Minnie Jeannette Newbert born October 29 1881 in Missouri who died from escaping gas from an un lighted stove in a poorly ventilated trailer at 102 E Grand St Artesia. Police Chief Frank Powell found the body after neighbors reported she had not been seen since Saturday night. She lived alone since her husband’s death in 1948 and is survived by a sister Irma C Spiecher of Oxnard California. The Newberts moved to Artesia from McCamey Texas in 1937 and once ran a grocery on South First Street.
