In St Paul crowds file past a flag draped coffin as Vice President Mondale and President Carter lead tributes to Hubert Humphrey. Carter calls him beloved and his funeral follows a Capitol memorial and Washington service. Meanwhile a Cerritos fire damages the Patricia Nixon Memorial Home.
An AP NBC News poll finds 57 percent rate Jimmy Carter's overall job performance as only fair or near, with 41 percent rating it excellent or good. The survey of 1,604 Americans conducted last Tuesday and Wednesday shows a continued popularity slide into 1978 despite a seven nation foreign tour.
Judge Norman Randolph Reese of Hobbs announces candidacy in the June Democratic primary for district judge Division IV. Appointed May 17 1973 and elected Nov 5 1974 for term ending Dec 31 1978. He has presided since May 30 1974 and previously served as district attorney from 1949 to 1952. He and his wife reside in Hobbs at 1330 Cimarron with three children.
In Milan Italy a jealous husband descended a four story building by rope to catch his wife in a bachelor apartment. The rope broke and Giovanni G a 31 year old man fell to a second floor balcony breaking his right leg. Tenants mistook him for a burglar and called police. The wife was not in the apartment.
Senator Pete Domenici said New Mexico has a strong chance to land one of two inland brackish water desalination demonstration projects within two to three years. He noted the Tularosa Basin could supply millions of gallons daily if the technology matures, stressing water for rural areas and agriculture.
