Several hundred AFL CIO leaders from across the nation left Washington rallying for speedy congressional action to repeal Section 14B of the Taft Hartley Act.
House Labor Committee chief Powell tells 800 labor leaders hearings start January 25 and repeal bills reach the House floor by March 1. Johnson aides had given vague timing amid a broad labor agenda including minimum wage and shorter week. Powell also vows action on anti discrimination in apprenticeship programs.
J C Powell, chair of the Chamber of Commerce revitalization committee, outlined a downtown parking solution to Rotarians. The plan may create an assessment district funded 80 percent by federal loans and 20 percent by local share to retire $300,000 in bond debt from meter revenues.
The nation's first Job Corps cadre begins training at a mountain retreat in Catoctin Mountain Park. The pioneer group includes 11 Baltimoreans and 19 youths from Virginia and Kentucky. They will be sworn in at Baltimore City Hall before a 60 mile bus trip to the site near Camp David. Marion Pines from Goucher College oversees recruiting in Baltimore reporting 750 applications in six weeks.
President Johnson urged Congress to extend the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency for four years and to approve 55 million dollars in funding. He argued that halting nuclear spread is essential to U S security and that nonproliferation remains a top objective. Agency Director Foster said current funding will not cover next year and the agency is integral to national security policy.
London sources say Prime Minister Harold Wilson postponed plans to meet President Charles de Gaulle citing an implied rebuke after a French officials’ delay in London talks with Foreign Secretary Patrick Gordon Walker. Wilson aims to meet President Johnson in Washington first and may not travel again until March if possible.
A Thursday night fire at the State Mental Hospital in St Louis killed two women patients and threatened more than 1,000 others. Firemen and staff worked quickly to prevent a larger tragedy.
Washington AP reports a nuclear device tested in Nevada may lead to a delayed underground blast near Carlsbad New Mexico. AEC official John Kelly declined to estimate timing of the potential test as plans develop.
In Saigon area, a helicopter struck a power line on a road nine miles from the capital, killing the pilot and gunner and a Vietnamese observer. Two other Americans were injured. Two U.S. aircraft were lost during convoy escort north of Saigon amid Viet Cong activity.

Skiing on upper and lower Sierra Blanca trails near Ruidoso is good to excellent this weekend with two inches of granular snow on a base of three to six inches. Santa Fe Ski Basin is excellent with chains advised. Sandia Peak ranges from good to excellent on upper trails and fair to good on lower. Red River and Taos report excellent conditions.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr addressed cheering Negroes in Selma pledging a week of massive public accommodations testing and a voter registration drive. He said the effort would challenge national conscience and serve as a test for the city's new administration trying to shed Selma’s image of racial strife.
