Port Arthur Texas January 15 eight are known dead and twenty seven injured in a blast at a Texas Company refinery. Fire and collapse left workers trapped in ruins as crews search for more victims. Cause of the explosion is not yet known.
Washington discussion on a selective immigration plan requires applicants abroad to obtain an immigration certificate from an American consular office after examination. All arrivals must pass standard physical mental and moral tests. Preference classes include spouses and minor children of aliens, veterans of US forces, ministers professors skilled workers and other laborers. Non migrants cover bona fide residents returning from abroad and others. Possible quota enforcement against Canada Mexico and South America after five years abroad.
Treasury notice warns all claimants against Citizens National Bank of Roswell New Mexico to file with Receiver W J McInnes within three months or be disallowed. Also, Life Arraign Gonzales reports arraignment for possession and sale of intoxicating liquor before Judge A F Fletcher as Roswell tightens Volstead Act enforcement.
Paris January 15 All taxes in France are to be raised twenty percent. The cabinet plans strict economy in public service and adjournment of all pensions and bonuses as part of the financial adjustment program to be presented in the chamber of deputies immediately.
Washington, Jan 15. Formal bids for the Democratic national convention were filed by New York, San Francisco, St. Louis and Chicago with the Democratic national committee. A sub committee will ballot on the city late this afternoon. New York increased its offer to 150000 dollars for a free convention hall and radio broadcasting concessions valued at 25000 to 40000 dollars. The committee will also consider ways to wipe out a 180000 dollar deficit in the party treasury from the last campaign.
Georgia news reports Stone Mountain Memorial nearing its first climax as carving of General Lee and southern leaders on horseback will be unveiled January 19. Governors Hardee Brandon Peay McLeod Trinkle Morrison and other dignitaries will attend along with congressmen and U D C officials. A breakfast tour and dance follow in Atlanta hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and Stone Mountain Memorial Association.

Marion Illinois January 15 Sheriff Galligan of Williamson county requested Governor Small to withdraw the state troops sent to quiet conditions following liquor raids. Small had said he would withdraw the troops only when Galligan made the request.
In Fort Worth Texas at noon seven jurors were chosen for the murder trial of Ralph Vaneil, charged in the death of an eight day old baby. A venire of two hundred was exhausted and the judge ordered a new venire drawn.
Las Vegas Rotarians announced plans for the district convention to be held in March in Las Vegas. An executive two day session will host delegates from New Mexico Arizona and Southwestern Texas with entertainment including two luncheons a mammoth banquet and the district governor’s hall. Delegates and their wives are expected to arrive Sunday before the start and many will depart Tuesday night.
New York January 14 Connie Mack stated that punch is more essential than brains in baseball as he buys young minor league stars to boost the Athletics. He notes hitting defines modern games, pitching has declined, and teams need slugging to win pennants, citing the Giants’ 1904 season as example of success with strong hitting despite weak staff.
Austin report shows Texas railroads earned net operating revenues of 32 953 479 dollars for ten months ending October 31 1928. This sums to a 3 823 700 dollar or 13.44 percent increase over the same period in 1922 per a release from the State Railroad Commission.

The new board of directors and retiring board of the Chamber of Commerce will meet tonight. Old members will close unfinished business as the new board elects officers for the year. The proposed work program aims to broaden activities beyond prior scope, with a special committee report guiding tonight's discussion.
Victor A Raymond aged 65 died this afternoon after a brief illness following a stroke a week earlier. He lived in Roswell for years and recently managed the Zuni Hotel. His wife died years ago. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 30 PM at Tilton's chapel with Rev T E Thuresson of the First Methodist church officiating. The Roswell paper also notes ads for sales books and a forthcoming recital by Mme Lia Robinson Jones at the Armory on January 21 with admission 50 cents.
Governor Neil A. Nebo? The text states Texas laughed at reports that he would declare his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination tonight in a speech to the Anti-Socon League. He said he had no intention of being a candidate.

Martin Fagin, a Fort Worth resident, was struck by a street car causing multiple leg fractures. He already lost one leg in a previous accident, and doctors fear the broken limb may require amputation. He believes fate is against him.

C. M. Hester left yesterday for Phoenix where he plans to spend the winter after renting his East Grand Plains farm. Mrs. Hester and her sister Miss Lulu Rise followed this morning aboard the White Ling to join him in Arizona.
A Roswell Auto advertisement promotes pairing a Federal Cord Tire with a Federal Cord Tube. The copy asserts that a bad tube can ruin a good tire and vice versa, claiming the two products will run thousands of miles together.

Vienna Austria January 15 Director of the Electro pathic Institute declares he has established that electrocu tion does not produce death but a cad eptic state from which the victim will awaken. He revived many persons who were accidentally electrocuted and pronounced dead by physicians. He says many who were executed in the United States for murder were actually buried alive.
For East Texas the forecast calls for cloudy skies with occasional rain tonight and Wednesday, followed by rain in the east and colder conditions in the west. West Texas expects partly cloudy skies tonight and Wednesday with likely snow in the north, and colder temperatures in the north on both nights and Wednesday.
Hiram F. Weaver aged sixty one died yesterday afternoon at 507 South Richardson Avenue after a brief illness following a church service. He recently moved to Roswell from Rochester New York with wife and son Jesse who later joined the family planing mill business on East Walnut Street. Weaver was active in the Baptist church Odd Fellows Rebekah Lodges and the Carpenters Union and leaves a wife a son and a granddaughter. Funeral arrangements by Frank Talmage Jr. Roswell Undertaking Company will be announced later.
The Roswell Advertising club holds its regular weekly meeting tomorrow at 12 15 at the Chamber of Commerce. L F Woodhead will share billboard advertising experiences and H A Poorbaugh will explain why every business house in Roswell should join the Advertising club.
Reports from Tokio dated January 15 describe a three minute quake blamed on the Sept disaster. It disrupted all wire communications and train service, wrecked several transports, and caused heavy losses near Osawara while Tokio saw limited damage as lines were soon cut after the shock.
In Carlsbad a business meeting formed a committee to probe the National Bank of Carlsbad closing. Bank officials said it was in better shape than a year ago and had paid 140000 on federal reserve debt last fall. Cotton farmers and crop money, about 200000, fed the bank, and 80 percent of Carlsbad project patrons are affected. The failure is blamed on the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank withholding funds despite the bank’s timely paydown.
Dr Frank Church spoke to a small Roswell crowd at the high school auditorium last night. The lecture drew praise as among the best heard in the city and urged younger residents to hear him. A repeat performance was planned for next Sunday at either the Armory or high school auditorium with no admission.
