Roswell Downtown Stores and a Baseball Billboard Remembered

In Roswell the historic mercantile scene included spices, canned goods, dry goods and hardware with apothecary sections and occasional coffins. The era’s sidewalks were dirt, stores heated by cast iron stoves, and a wooden downtown evolving with autos and paving. A porch billboard big enough to host a baseball diamond tracked games and fans gathered near the Bankhead Hotel, Katie’s Café and the Smoke House to watch World Series action.
