Burpo vows against drug legalization in bid for governor
State representative Rob Burpo, a Republican gubernatorial candidate, says he will not legalize drugs if elected. A mailer of 5,000 New Mexicans showed 92 percent opposed any decriminalization, with six percent backing medical legalization. He cites AMA studies on marijuana potency and immune effects, arguing today’s weed is stronger than in past decades. He favors targeted treatment funding over new bureaucracy and supports smoking cessation programs, speaking after visiting Carlsbad and Roswell.
