Rivers Flood in Missouri and Chicago Car Shortages
The Mississippi at St Louis rose to 22 feet and breached a gorge leading to wreckage and over two hundred thousand dollars in property loss. Ice and flood pressures blocked rail lines, telegraphs, and fuel supplies, while northeast Chicago faces a fuel famine as cars freeze. The Alton gorge extends to twenty three miles with rail and river disruptions widespread. A new firm led by Gross Bemis and Miller plans to resume operations at the old stand with A H Rockafellow remaining onboard.
