NextEra eyes 290 million solar farm near Roswell
Chaves County plans to start a review that could approve a 1,300 acre solar development 5 to 8 miles northeast of downtown Roswell linking three projects of 30 and 70 megawatts. If built by 2016 it could power over 40,000 homes and create 300 to 400 construction jobs. NextEra Energy Resources aims to interconnect at a 115 kV line. No power purchase agreement yet.

Roswell Tourism Council Name Change Approved
The Chaves County Tourism Council will become the Roswell Tourism Council in the new year. Judy Stubbs notes Roswell branding will aid recognition while Elaine Mayfield adds most non Roswell residents would search for Roswell. The ad hoc committee of Stubbs Mayfield Moore and Stevens led the change at the January meeting. The group discussed brochures and local tourism, with participation from other county communities fading as state funds declined. Members voted unanimously to proceed.

Roswell Police Committee reviews staffing shortages and new recruits
The Roswell Police Committee learned the department has about 13 openings out of 98 total positions after one retirement. Deputy Chief Brad McFadden said four new officers are in training and others are in progress from Michigan, with two recent academy graduates among top performers. He noted previous recruitment trips to Michigan yielded fewer officers than hoped and no El Paso trip recently.

NM lab pursues record cold with optical refrigeration
A University of New Mexico physics team led by Mansoor Sheik Bahar is refining optical refrigeration to cool solids. Using a laser tuned to a specific wavelength, crystals absorb light and reemit higher energy photons, drawing heat away and lowering temperatures to around minus 184 Celsius, with LANL collaboration advancing the work.
