Search for permanent New Mexico penitentiary warden begins

Santa Fe The hunt for a permanent warden and an associate warden at the New Mexico State penitentiary started today. Acting Warden Harold Swenson may be considered for the top job, keeping a federal retirement plan in mind as the board weighs options. Indian Winter Covers the State

The Associated Press reports Indian Winter continues in New Mexico with blue skies and mild warmth. Weather Bureau forecasts the West Coast storms will miss the state and keep pleasant weather through Friday. Glenwood recorded the warmest reading at 69 while Raton and Las Vegas reached 59.

Grants Sought In Five Year Aid Program

Eisenhower asked Congress to provide 1.5 billion dollars in federal grants over five years to address the school shortage. He proposed up to 750 million in local bond purchases if districts cannot sell bonds, plus 20 million for state school planning grants. Federal outlay would total about 2 billion, with state matching and a wealth-based formula.

Artesia Man Guilty of Disturbing Peace

F. J. Austin, a 31 year old Artesia service station attendant, broke windows in his girlfriend’s car Sunday morning and was jailed in lieu of a 25 dollar fine after a sheriff's deputy arrest following a signed complaint.

Booster Section From Nike Rocket Severs Gas Line

White Sands officials identified the object that cut Alamogordo gas lines as a Nike rocket booster section. Public information officer Bill Haggart said the booster fell during a routine Nike test, and it helps reach velocity before separating at about a mile altitude. The break occurred eight miles north of the headquarters area.

Two Special Events Set for Saturday in Dimes Campaign

In Roswell, two March of Dimes drives are planned this Saturday. States Day in front of First National Bank is run by Legion Auxiliary D.A.V. Auxiliary and V.F.W.
