A fire swept the Pecos Valley Railroad Depot in Roswell New Mexico on the night of January 1 1904 destroying the building and leaving investigators to determine the cause. Local authorities and volunteers battled the blaze through the eleven o clock hour as flames consumed the structure.
The Ward Board freight depot burned to the ground after a fire started in the battery room. Debris and loss of freight storage exceeded the value of the building, with a temporary three-car depot and improvised facilities aiding service.
The Sad News of Her Death Has Bee received in Roswell reports the passing of Mrs. Mary Browning Starkweather formerly of Roswell. She died at her mother Annie Brownrigg’s home in Marshall Texas after long illness. The funeral will be held at nine thirty this morning from Mrs. Brownrigg’s residence to Greenwood Cemetery with Rev Dean Bowers officiating. The Messenger offers condolences to her husband daughter and family.
The city council met Friday night at the Mayor's Office to consider better fire protection and a horses for the fire department. No decision was made and the item was postponed to the next regular meeting. The engineer was ordered to install a fire hydrant in the Fourth ward tied to the Ogle well.
