The University of California Scientific Laboratory at Los Alamos announces active research, design and construction of five nuclear power reactors. One reactor will drive development toward supplying the atomic city with electric power.
The War Office announced Britain will increase forces at the Cyprus base to protect subjects in the Middle East if needed. The contingent will include airborne units and be flown to Cyprus where Britain’s air and land forces in the region are based.
Artesia officials nominate Homer Glover owner of a Roswell packing company to join the U S Chamber of Commerce board. Nomination requires six chamber presidents in a seven state district to sign. Glover, a past Roswell chamber president, may seek the seat currently held by Robert Appleman of Rocky Ford Colorado.
In Yokosuka near Tokyo a ceremony honors U S military unknown dead from the Korean War before they are shipped to Hawaii for burial. The light cruiser Manchester will move the first 50 bodies to Honolulu for burial at Punchbowl Cemetery. the transfer is to be completed by February 15.
In Lea County a 20 ton work cage fell 230 feet in a National Potash Co shaft between Hobbs and Carlsbad. Bill Jurney, 30, died from injuries last night, bringing the death toll to three. Two others died instantly. two more remained hospitalized in St Francis.
The New Mexico Health Department notes a marked rise in children's diseases in 1955 with polio showing 132 cases, down from 233 the prior year and versus a five-year median of 138. Tuberculosis cases fell to 747 from 907 in 1954 and a five-year median of 910.
Edward B Simmons surveys the UN charter origin arguing it was shaped at Dumbarton Oaks and Yalta with US and USSR central roles. He notes San Francisco framed a two cornerstone plan solidarity of great powers and political military burden sharing, later proven false. Stanley Morton Finger a 17 year old Long Beach State student attempted a bank date gesture by presenting a note asking clerk Ann Jerry to go to a show. Miss Jerry alerted staff and police. Finger was handcuffed by a supervisor and questioned by FBI agents before release. He remains eager for a date but will not use notes again.
Malco Refineries of Roswell sells the Prewitt refinery with a 3000 barrel capacity and about 80 miles of pipeline in the San region to El Paso Natural Gas Co. for an undisclosed price under a contract of sale.
Roswell has more than doubled its wholesale center since 1948 and is now the second largest in the state. In 1954 81 wholesale merchants and others sold over 43.5 million dollars with 655 employees and a 2.47 million payroll. The 1948 base had 59 merchant wholesalers and 322 workers. Roswell supplies over 95 percent of Chaves county wholesale activity, with Lea and Eddy counties also showing growth in wholesale volumes.
President Eisenhower met with Republican congressional leaders to push farm legislation as a top priority. The session highlighted a 10 year highway program and a soil bank to reduce crop acreage while Democrats prepare the agenda. Benson criticized wartime incentives and termed the soil bank a bold temporary fix to curb surpluses, while warning of future demand for greater farm output.

Riverhead New York judge Edgar F Hazleton dismissed Dora Blowers 57 of Livingston New Jersey suit claiming to be the secret wife of late millionaire William K Vanderbilt. She sought a widow's share in the 35 million dollar Vanderbilt estate from 1944. She alleged marriage at Stamford Connecticut on December 30 1925 with Vanderbilt using the name Arthur Blowers.
Weather experts warn New Mexico and the central plains face a severe dust storm season. A seven state dust bowl area from Nebraska to New Mexico is forecast with eastern Colorado described as a powder keg. Sub normal runoff threatens irrigated valleys, eastern New Mexico and West Texas expect the worst winds while moisture remains scarce.
Janis Paige and TV producer Arthur Stander plan to marry January 18 in Las Vegas Nevada. It will be the second marriage for both, as announced by her agent.
