Admiral Stark Outlines Guam Navy Needs and Ship Plans

Admiral Harold R. Stark told Congress the Navy seeks about 4 million dollars to advance Guam improvements though last year’s plan was defeated. He said the work centers on dredging breakwaters for underwater runways, with earlier proposals costing up to 5 million. Stark also discussed future battleship sizes, indicating 50,000 to 52,000 tons as likely, and rejected 70,000 to 80,000 ton "super-battleships" as unnecessary.

Barbecue and Bull Party Planned for Carlsbad Road

In El Paso on January 9, L P Bloodworth of the Carlsbad chamber of commerce announced a barbecue and bull party to celebrate the Carlsbad road project. New Mexico will host honors since its side finished first, with Pine Spring as the venue. New Mexico Democrats See Big Lead After Jackson Day Dinner

Governor Miles predicted Democrats would win a larger majority in New Mexico this year than ever before at the Jackson Day dinner in Albuquerque. About 300 partisans attended the $25 plate event. Ernest O. Thompson of Amarillo spoke, likening Roosevelt to Andrew Jackson. Former governor Clyde Tingley attended, and District Judge David Chavez Jr. commented on Jackson’s character.

Livestock Feeding Tour Opens in Eddy and Chaves

A two day livestock feeding tour will visit Eddy County sites on January 10 and Chaves County on January 11 led by the Eastern New Mexico Feeders and Producers Association. Dispatches from Finland report thousands of terrified Russians roaming east of Suomassalmi as the 44th division is destroyed. Finnish skiers rout, round up, or annihilate retreating troops while supply lines and field kitchens are targeted. About 6,000 Russians killed and 1,000 captured in a week near Suomassalmi. 10,000 to 15,000 retreating, morale collapsing. Finns expect another push on the Karelian Isthmus.

Washington January 9 A heated exchange aboard the house committee probing the Wagner labor act featured Rep Murdock Utah interrupting counsel Edmund Toland as he questioned Julius Schiezinger of the labor board over summarizing testimony. Chairman Smith Va ruled the exchange stricken while Murdock pressed his complaint of unfairness without accepting apologies.

Baptist Ministers In Highway Crash Near Colorado Springs

Six Baptist ministers traveling from southwestern Colorado to a Denver conference were injured when their covered truck skidded and hit an automobile six miles north of Colorado Springs.
