Roswell Ward 5 race tests street renaming push for Chavez King
Incumbent Elena Velasquez faces Barry Foster and Sergio S. Gonzalez as she seeks another four year term on the Roswell City Council. Velasquez has pushed to rename South Main Street César Chavez Boulevard and undeveloped Nevada Street Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue amid opposition from property owners and lack of county support. Foster, a former councilor and Monterrey Elementary teacher, says street renaming needs a supermajority and stresses potential costs to businesses while open to naming a new recreation center after Chavez.
