Acme Gypsum Cement Co and the Rise of Acme NM
The Acme area on US 70 near Portales grew around the Acme Gypsum Cement Co established about 1905. The plant employed about 100 workers, covered 160 acres, and supported a full village with depot, store, hotel, and company houses. The school, church, and social life centered at the one room schoolhouse, while water came from rail-haul deliveries and wells. The company later became Certain-Teed Products Corp by 1927 and ceased operation in the 1930s, leaving a fading community with historic ruins and a small cemetery.
