Roosevelt Submits Budget With 8.5 Billion Expenditures

President Roosevelt sent a budget to Congress calling for 8 520 413 609 in total expenditures for the coming fiscal year starting July 1. Receipts are estimated at 3 991 904 639 creating a projected deficit of 4 528 508 970 and a public debt near 34 239 000 000 by June 30, 1936.

Supreme Court Invalidates Part Of NRA Oil Code

In its first ruling on the New Deal Act the Supreme Court held invalid the clause authorizing government control of oil production. Chief Justice Hughes said broad delegation of legislative power requires clear limits. The Panama Refining Co and Amazon Petroleum Co of East Texas challenged the provision. the Fifth Circuit had ruled opposite.

Betty Bow testimony in Hauptmann Lindbergh case

Miss Betty Bow a key witness in the Lindbergh kidnaping trial testified about the night of the abduction while Dr John F Condon prepared to identify Hauptmann as the man who took the ransom. The defense led by Edward J Reilly pressed for vigorous cross examination and promised to reveal the alleged accomplices.

Ward Liner Havana Wreckengers Rescued After Reef Stranding

Rescue ships answered a call for help as passengers of the Ward liner Havana were saved from a Bahamas reef. One passenger, Robert Rittenhouse of Brooklyn, died in a lifeboat. The Havana held 51 passengers and 127 crew. 83 crew remained with Captain A W Peterson as wrecking tugs awaited. A life boat swamped in heavy seas, but most transfers to the freighter El Oceano were uneventful.

Grover Godfrey and Milton McMakin End Liquor Store Suit

Grover Godfrey and Milton McMakin agreed to close their liquor store at 100 South Main after appearing in district court before Judge George W. Hay on an order to show cause for an injunction. The injunction was dismissed on the basis of the agreement. Lake J. Frazier, assistant district attorney, filed the complaint alleging sale of liquor to minors.

Local Cotton Meeting Invites Roswell Chamber for New Mexico

A Roswell Chamber of Commerce committee led by C R McNally is invited to a State College Las Cruces meeting to press for a bigger tax free cotton allotment under the Bankhead Act for irrigated New Mexico. Members include George French Dr A D Crile J P White Jr H L Gifford George Perrine John Tweedy and R L Malone with Chaves county’s M Y Monical O B Crawford and Harry Cowan named on the county committee.

Boydstun Installed as Commander of Spanish War Vets

John F. Boydstun of Roswell was installed as commander of Clay Green Camp No. 7 United Veterans of the Spanish War at the Artesia Hotel. M Y Monical of Hagerman became vice-commander with W L Wagner of Causey and W J Wilson of Roswell as officers. The camp covers all of Eastern New Mexico. A noon dinner preceded the meeting and installation.

County Commissioners Hold Meeting and Buy-Order System

The new Board of County Commissioners led by S. P. Johnson with George Wilcox and Ernest Nelson held its regular monthly meeting. They voted to install a county purchase order system requiring merchants to present countersigned orders by County Clerk Ralph A. Sheehan. Only routine business was transacted beyond this reform.

Relief official vows efficient NM relief board reform

Santa Fe January 7 Gov Clyde Tingley reorganized the state relief board to be more efficient and businesslike. He announced two new members Don Hoover and Mrs C C Meacham and reappointed Mrs David Chavez Mrs Oren Beatty and Dr R O Brown. He warned he would remove members if needed to improve operations and said federal funds must be used wisely to provide work and prevent hunger. He cited a Roosevelt letter supporting efficient administration and noted Miss Margaret Reeves remains state director of relief and public welfare.

New Board Named for Disabled Veterans Relief

Santa Fe January 7 AP Loren zo Gutierrez of Santa Fe AL Atherton of Albuquerque and Hinds O Welch of Cliff were named to day by Gov Clyde Tingley to the board of the disabled soldiers relief commission Succeeding the former board which the governor removed last week The board met this morning and planned talks with the governor John Chapman named state service officer for the board The governor said the appointments reflect the legislature's intent and that all three men are disabled veterans with experience in handling compensation claims for themselves and other veterans their widows and orphans

Reconstruction of Old Lincoln Tower Completed

The Lincoln El Terreon Tower in Lincoln was rebuilt as a FERA project after long efforts by the Chaves County Archaeological and Historical Society. A dedication ceremony is planned for February with J F Himkle and J M Martin leading arrangements and K B Disher supervising reconstruction.

Fiancée of Joe Brochheuser Dies in Kansas City

Miss Frances Geyer of Roswell, engaged to Joe Brochheuser, died at her Kansas City home last Friday. Brochheuser and his sister Frances left yesterday to attend the funeral services.

State Legislature Set to Open Session in Santa Fe

The twelfth New Mexico legislature gathers in Santa Fe facing taxation and revenue issues for a 60 day session. A delayed caucus shifts tonight for officers with Alvan N. White of Silver City likely to be speaker. Rep. O. S. Greaser of Quay County presses county consolidation plans and a possible $2,500 homestead exemption amid sales tax debate and reliance on federal relief funds.
