Old Directors Nominated for Year 1920 Election

The Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual election on January 20. A nominating committee renominated seven directors with terms expiring this month: J. E. Dunn Ray Wagoner Prager Miller J. K. Harrison D. W. Low W. C. Lawrence and E. J. Williams. Members may nominate by January 10 by posting on the bulletin board. Voting runs 10 am to 4 pm. The new board will elect officers for 1920 and push growth for Roswell and Chaves County.

Packers Still Subject to Prosecution Despite Agreement

Washington January 7 The Dig Five packers remain exposed to criminal or civil action even after agreeing with the government to sell side-lines. Attorney General Palmer told the Senate Agriculture Committee he did not promise immunity and doubts new legislation is needed. He said the agreement followed Packers’ request to conform to government aims and rejected charges of favoritism toward labor leaders.

Washington reports Gabriel Porter an American oil employee was shot and killed by a Carranza army officer at Tuxpam on December 21. The Tampico consul advises the State Department. Full reports are awaited on two other American killings near Porto Lobos. the embassy is pressing for punishment.

Devastating Mexico Earthquake Kills Thousands Across Regions

Reports from Mexico City and Vera Cruz outline a catastrophic quake last Saturday with at least two thousand fatalities. Casautlan bears a thousand dead, Chilcolta wrecked by a hillside collapse, Saltilla partly destroyed with eighty five bodies found, and Jalapa reporting a hundred deaths. Oil wells in Tuxpam spit forth, and several tremors followed in Mexico City.

Latest Peace Compromise Not Acceptable to Lodge Republicans

Washington January 7 The latest democratic peace treaty compromise is not acceptable to the Lodge faction of Republican senators. Democrats will revise their reservations and return them. If modified and accepted, sixty four votes may ratify the treaty. If not, the Underwood resolution for a conciliation committee will be urged as a last resort. If President Wilson again demands unqualified ratification the compromise attempt will be dropped.

A spontaneous powder explosion at the Du Pont powder plant in Uniontown Pa injures one person and causes about ten thousand dollars in property damage. The blast was powerful enough to throw people from their beds within a ten mile radius.

Paris reports a German note to the peace conference opposing the trial of the scuttling fleet officers and the surrender of five light cruisers to France. Salvation Army Christmas Work in Roswell Report Summary

The Salvation Army Roswell reports on its Christmas effort with baskets and a poor children’s tree. During December, 294 homes were visited, 115 hours worked, cash donations 143.00, provisions and toys valued at 86.30, total 229.30. Baskets reached 24 families. 94 people in those families. New Year’s Eve entertainment gave 65 children toys and 154 sacks of candy and fruit. Expenses totaled 108.05 with a relief balance of 34.95. Reports and vouchers on file. books open for inspection.
