A retired couple were away at the hospital when burglars hit their Roswell residence and fled with family heirlooms worth about $600. The incident appears on page 3 of the Daily Record Roswell.
Soviet tanks planes and helicopter gunships battled government troops and guerrillas as Moscow presses deeper into Afghanistan to block rebel reinforcements from Iran. Western diplomats say China aids Moslem fighters and the United States seeks united action against the 50 000 strong Soviet force on day ten of the invasion.
Militants holding 50 Americans in Tehran issued a communique demanding Bruce Laingen surrender for questioning at the Foreign Ministry. They said Air Force Lt. Col. David Roeder would be tried as a war criminal with Vietnam invited to attend. Waldheim left Tehran for Zurich after failed mediation as Iran, the U.N., and NATO weigh responses to the Afghanistan invasion.
Roswell City Council unanimously approved the proposed city charter in a special session, ordering it placed on the March 4 ballot after 8-0 vote with two members absent. The measure includes recall and death provisions, with 1,000 charter copies to be distributed and four readings in the Daily Record. Voters must register by Jan 22 and file candidacy by Jan 29.
President Carter held a 90 minute briefing with foreign policy advisers with Jody Powell warning Iran could face Soviet subversion if the hostage crisis persists. The White House reviewed actions on Afghanistan, grain policy and possible Olympic boycott as Brown pursued talks in China.
The United States plans rapid delivery of $150 million in already purchased weapons to Pakistan after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Officials also said Pakistan may submit a shopping list for further US arms, though full military aid is currently banned by a congressional mandate.
Retired Army officer George Wright, head of the security team at Fort Knox, warns higher gold prices invite robbery attempts. He says the mission is to protect the gold though he declines to detail extra precautions. The depository holds $6.2 billion at $42/oz, while bars could fetch over $90 billion at record London prices.
