In Algiers the Secret Army Organization urged a general mobilization of European settlers for a final stand to defend French Algeria. Three days into the year, at least 60 people were killed and over 130 wounded in attacks by Europeans and Muslims, with handbills calling settlers to readiness amid talk of De Gaulle's government concessions.
The Roswell YMCA sponsors a Christmas tree gathering led by Chi Chi Hi-Y Club to prevent fire hazards. Eight boys collect trees for a Saturday bonfire at 6 30 p m on the field south of the High School, with a pep rally before the Roswell Lovington basketball game.
Roswell School District No. 1 has been granted a 197,516 payment from Public Law 874 toward a tentative 286,256 allocation for the fiscal year. Washington Official McMurrin notified Senator Anderson that funds aid maintenance and operation of defense-impacted area schools.
Marvin Shurbet testified in federal court that the High Plains water table is dropping on his 480 acre Floy County farm. He says pumps must be lowered and wells dug deeper, seeking oil style tax depletion for irrigation water. The suit, a test case for the High Plains Water Conservation District, targets 1959 tax year and about $300, with potential impact on thousands of irrigation farmers in 47 Panhandle counties.

Willard F. Rhinehart, 47, a motorman on an underground train, died in a mine accident near Carlsbad today. Investigators expect to determine exact cause as authorities inspect the scene. Local officials expressed condolences to Rhinehart’s family and coworkers.
Moscow sources report Soviet Premier Khrushchev is ill with grippe and has postponed his planned trip to Byelorussia. The development comes as informants disclose he will rest at the capital and reassess engagements in coming days.

Washington AP reports Fred Korth aged 52 a Texan and former assistant secretary of the army was sworn in today as secretary of the navy confirming a high level ascent and political leadership in the defense establishment.
New York police report Paul Walker, 30, of the Bronx, was arrested today on a charge of conspiracy to bribe two North Carolina basketball players nearly two years ago.
President Kennedy works on the annual State of the Union but plans to depart Florida for Washington late Friday. He will fly to Columbus for a DiSalle birthday fundraiser and may meet Democratic leaders in the capital.
Roswell police checked a hit and run Wednesday night when a car backed into them on South Poplar Avenue. Donald Wieburg and Gerald Goldman were knocked by the vehicle driven by Donald Lee who was charged with drunken driving and driving without a license and held on $600 bond. A court hearing was set for January 10 at 3 p.m.
A new surge of cold weather was expected to sweep into the northeast and southeast sections, bringing 10 to 20 degree drops. Roswell Municipal Airport said the front would pass by evening and winds today were from the pressure system, not the front. Central and western New Mexico would feel the change less. some clouds and wind with light snow possible. Friday stays cold. New Mexico highs were up modestly Wednesday except in the northwest where readings fell about 5 degrees from Tuesday.
President Sukarno declared West New Guinea would join Indonesia this year and rejected Dutch settlement offers. Armies prepared, 10000 veterans from Amboina and the Molucca islands are being re armed to join combat units. Jakarta hints at eventual self determination if admin control is temporarily given to Indonesia. Col Busjiri says the movement aims to halt a Papuan state and raise Indonesia's flag.
Special to the Daily Record reports Santa Fe area resorts see little new snow. Sierra Blanca shows good skiing with a 3 to 5 foot base and some powder. Road access is clear and facilities are in operation. Cloudcroft skiing is poor with crusty snow and a 10 inch base. sledding and tobogganing remain good.
Fannie Pearl Weekes widow of William Weekes sues former Gov John Burroughs for $100,000 claiming he failed to honor a March 1959 contract making Weekes general manager of Portales Valley Mills and entitled him to half the gross profits. Weekes served until his death January 7, 1961. The suit was filed in district court by Fred Tharp of Clovis.
In Budapest a 44 hour television revue lampoons Hungary's regime, targeting shoddy building and social class myths. Skits show a plumber mocking new apartments and a journalist interviewing a worker on a decoupled farm as regime officials smile in the front row. A student mocks Voice of America jamming. Roswell saw a general rise in 1961 across armed robberies accidents involving drunken driving rapes grand larceny petit larceny aggravated assault and auto injuries. Armed robberies more than doubled to nine from four while DWI related injuries nearly doubled to 63. Rapes rose to two and grand larceny jumped to 392. Burglaries and auto theft fell and juvenile citations dropped.
