Pentagon Reconstruction Shifts Toward 2003 Completion Goal
Reconstruction of the Pentagon after the Sept 11 attack is projected to cost over 700 million dollars and run through spring 2003. The plan focuses on rebuilding the outer ring and memorial dedication by the first anniversary, with Indiana limestone slabs arriving to match the exterior. The effort follows months of debris removal and partial reopening for displaced workers while some memorials fade and others remain.

Six adults faced arson charges as NSW Premier Carr urged evidence to convict and lock away the suspects. A massive bushfire roared through Sydney suburbs, fueled by tinder dry parkland, with hundreds of firefighters, water drops, and new spot fires as winds shifted. No deaths were reported though 150 homes were destroyed and 741000 acres burned. Authorities warned the fire would stay dangerous for 24 hours, while crews saved 250 threatened homes and battled blazes near Canberra assisting the national capital's southern outskirts.
