Death toll rises in holiday traffic
The Associated Press reports the New Year holiday weekend traffic toll rose past 170 with many regions facing wintry conditions. Weather varied from snow flurries in the East and Great Lakes to freezing rain in parts of the South and West while the Midwest endured windshield frosting. The National Safety Council projected 350 to 450 fatalities for the four day period ending Sunday, after 416 deaths last year and a 1965 peak of 564.
