State representative Carl Whittaker said he would demand a substantial reason for his dismissal as manager of the Pernalillo county federal re employment office. In Artesia New Mexico on January 2 two two story buildings in Hope burned to the ground from defective flues. One belonged to John Prude the other to Mrs Lulu Riley. Estimated losses run about 30000 each. Also Hope reported its first robbery of the year with seven to eight dollars in cash and small merchandise taken from the Van Store between Sunday night and Monday morning.

Also, a local Boy Scout council meeting is announced for tomorrow evening at the Scout office in the courthouse from 7 to 8.
The Gross-Miller Grocery Company won The Record's contest for the best Christmas window. They receive $5 in advertising in The Record. The south window of the Gross-Miller store featured a display of fancy foods for the holidays, created by Wesley Foster, judged on attractiveness and selling appeal.
Washington January 2 AP Morgenthau Jr takes over as secretary of the treasury after Woodin resigns to seek health relief. Morgenthau had been acting secretary during Woodin’s leave and was sworn in after Roosevelt accepted Woodin’s resignation. Tucson Arizona AP notes Woodin expresses confidence in Roosevelt’s recovery program as he attends to health.

Santa Fe January 2 AP Governor A W Hockenhull says prospects for 1934 look bright after a strong late year uptick. He urges four goals for the year including a state chamber of commerce a state fair paving of major highways and a stronger home-owning spirit. He notes 40 million dollars invested in roads and urges spending to sustain a ten year payoff.
Albuquerque New Mexico January 2 AP Service charges will not be changed until a bankers code is approved. NRA committee of the regional clearing house for this district met and forwarded recommendations for code changes to Washington. Details not disclosed. Present were Paul A F Waller Santa Fe chairman C W Carson Albuquerque J F Luthy Albuquerque L C Becker Belen and B D Radcliffe Mountainair.
Albuquerque January 2 AP The New Mexico internal revenue office reports a large rise in calendar year 1933 tax collections totaling about $725000, up from roughly $371000 in 1932. Much of the increase is attributed to agricultural processing taxes that began in the latter half of 1933.
December tax receipts in Chaves county totaled 158659 dollars with additional deposits expected as remittances arrive by mail. Officials note some checks in transit will raise the total.
House Democrats planned a caucus for Thursday to back a rule change that would prevent a minority of representatives from forcing immediate consideration of legislation. Currently a petition by 145 representatives can compel action on a bill.
President Roosevelt notified congressional leaders that he will deliver his first annual message to Congress tomorrow in person, a departure from recent practice. The address will be short with few recommendations, and opening session proceedings will be broadcast nationwide by NBC and CBS starting at noon Eastern.
