Roswell mayor Gail Harris expresses optimism for 1965 powered by Walker Air Force Base expansion and local building, industry, and retirement facility plans. She cites WAFB personnel growth, orders for more housing, and stronger local commerce as key drivers.
Gail Harris president of the Roswell Board of Realtors reports 1964 sales of existing homes surpassed 1963 in both units and volume and predicts a strong 1965. He cites government purchases tapering, demand for mid to high range homes, and factors boosting sales including a junior college retirement facilities military growth and intensified advertising. New officers will take over January 16 with Johnny Owen of C S Development as incoming president.
City leaders outline a 1965 plan covering downtown revitalization municipal services and growth. Projects include Main Street improvements, twice weekly garbage pickup, expanded police and fire coverage, a larger zoo relocation, new golf facilities, airport upgrades, water supply expansion, and closer county cooperation to guide growth and pricing in livestock.
Roswell received more than seven million dollars from Walker Air Force Base in fiscal year 1964. Civilian payroll reached 1.85 million dollars while military payroll totaled 16.0 million and local supplies and services added 6.03 million.
Chaves county officials will not have formal swearing-in ceremonies. Officials will sign bonds and an oath of office to the state, kept on file in the county clerk’s office. Bond amounts range from 5000 to 75000 dollars. several incumbents are re elected. State representatives Helbing Goodell Johnson Shackelford and Senator Toles will take their oath when the legislature meets in Santa Fe on January 18.

Roswell Daily Record announces 1965 porch delivery for subscribers. Carriers will leave papers on the porch or at the door daily and issues should be reported to the circulation department between 5 and 7 p.m. at 622 7710.
Roswell postmaster Arthur J. Meiering was named to the executive committee of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States for a three year term starting January 1 1965. The Denver Region representative will join Mid January discussions with the Postmaster General and congressional committees. Meiering began as a Cincinnati carrier in 1936, later becoming Roswell superintendent of mails 1946 to 1950 and assistant postmaster 1950 to 1957 before his 1957 appointment as postmaster.
City Bank deposits rise across Roswell banks with 58.4 million in 1964 up from 55.2 million last year. Water meters increased by 117 to 14 160 with about 3.6 persons per meter served. Telephone customers fall by 819 to 22 945 while Western Gas Co. customers slip from 13 056 in 1963 to 13 016 in 1964.
The Roswell Kiwanis Club placed the first of 50 trees in Stiles Park Thursday marking the 50th Kiwanis anniversary. A Crosby Monument Co donation funds a commemorative plaque. The remaining 48 trees will be planted in mid January.
