Lawmakers rejected a bill to allow up to three school workers to carry concealed firearms with state licenses. The Education Committee voted 6-3 to table the measure, leaving schools to decide on campus gun access, amid talk of more counselors and guards but no budget funds.
The New Mexico House backed a plan to raise worker payroll contributions and change future benefits to close a $6 billion gap in the Educational Retirement Board. The bill, passed 50 to 17, would require higher deductions for staff earning over $20,000 and set a 55 retirement age for future hires with delayed cost of living adjustments.
