Laser gun promoter Gene Robbins leaves an empty house in Roswell after taking a $950 deposit from Jonathan Ciener for a demonstration model. Robbins failed to deliver the laser pistol and vanished, with U S officials noting possible mail fraud. Sen Wood resigned last weekend and Brainerd said he will decide in two weeks while Harrison announced his candidacy on Wednesday. The Republican race centers on Roswell District 31 with Roosevelt County as a key swing area. Couple on Jones death list shot in Berkeley home

A defectors couple from the People’s Temple, Al Mills and Jeannie Mills, were killed in their Berkeley residence once used as a haven for cult defectors. Their daughter Daphne was critically wounded and son Eddie unharmed as the attack occurred Tuesday night. A separate Brooklyn incident left a man shot in the back with an arrow as he entered a subway station. In Georgetown Guyana, Radio Surinam reported a civilian council to aid the military junta, not replace it, as a transitional measure.
