A local group calling itself the Jeff Davis Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans is described in a historical notice. The article notes the new organization adopting the label and its regional affiliation within the veteran heritage community.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans held a Saturday meeting in the courthouse to organize permanently. They adopted a constitution, elected officers led by Geo. M. Slaughter as Commandant, and set the new Jeff Davis Camp name after a vote against naming after Robert E. Lee or Joseph C. Lea. A period of enthusiasm followed as the body prepared to enroll about 336 members with additional activity by the Daughters of Confederate Veterans in support.
A 67 year old driver named Mr. Carter was trampled by wheels of a team near the Record office during a quake caused panic. He was carried to a nearby hand store and, though no bones were broken, he suffered severe bruising to the face neck chest and thighs.
A Buena Ventura cable states the February 21 earthquake lasted seven minutes and shook the town. A subsequent tidal wave caused widespread panic with estimated two thousand deaths from collapsed houses and drownings along the coast.

Vivian aged six died and the younger sibling twins remain gravely ill as the coroner investigates possible arsenic coloring and arrests are threatened.
In Washington on February 26 the Senate opened with a crowded gallery as Senator Tillman announced he intends to press the Hepburn rate bill at the earliest possible consideration. The speech signals a planned spirited debate over the bill’s provisions.
John Mitchell of the United Mine Workers endorsed the claim there will be no general strike on April 1. The remark echoed Vice President T. L. Lewis saying operators will restore the wage reductions from two years ago and an era of peace may follow for years. Mitchell agreed the statement seems correct.

A wagon runaway on Main Street at about 1 PM collided with Rev. G. H. Carter’s wagon after the team of R L Phillips broke loose in front of Morrison Bros. The collision caused damage and Carter narrowly escaped injury as his wagon wheels broke and control was lost.
Governor Gooding states Harry Orchard confessed to the Steunenberg assassination and implicated mine officers and others in twenty six murders. The case delays Caldwell grand jury action as Moyer Haywood Pettibone and Adams face postponement and Orchard improves to be fever free.
Captain John W. Poe departed Saturday afternoon for Old Mexico on a two week pleasure trip.
