Fair skies and warmer temperatures are expected in Roswell and vicinity today and tonight with variable high clouds and moderate winds. Today’s high around 54 and tonight’s low near 26 with a 0 to 2 percent precipitation chance. Tuesday should bring a high near 67 degrees and a minimal risk of rain.
Penn Central Railroad, cash strapped after bankruptcy, received 15.3 million dollars from the federal government to cover payroll and keep freight service moving through the week. The aid comes as the railroad faces 16.4 million in bills due and contemplates a future cap on oil prices and energy policy debates.
A weekend winter storm dropped three inches in Roswell with sections reporting seven inches and drifts up to four feet. The system, which developed in New Mexico, moved into the Great Lakes region, bringing widespread snow across several states and later thawing under sunny skies and rising temperatures.
Roswell Democrat Rep. Clayton Stallings says he will seek another job if he cannot both teach at ENMU Roswell and serve in the legislature. He questions a Grace bill to allow public employees to run for the House and notes legal ambiguity about university staff eligibility.
Armed men identified as AIM members briefly held a security guard at the Shiprock Fairchild electronics plant on the Navajo Reservation before releasing him unharmed. About 300 workers were told not to report for work as Navajo police set a barricade. plant management cited economic layoffs and sought outsiders to stay away during the incident.
John Ehrlichman, convicted in the Watergate cover-up, plans to go to Espanola New Mexico to work with northern pueblo Indians as personal penance. His attorney Ira M Lowe says he will work without pay on land use issues for subsistence.
Governor Apodaca will decide late today or Tuesday on Sam Papich director of the Governor's Organized Crime Prevention Commission. Papich faces calls for ouster as lawmakers debate funding with Sen. Thompson predicting higher Senate appropriations and no expected resignations or changes in the commission's makeup.
