Metering of irrigation wells unlikely to harm farm values

Fred Hennighausen of the State Engineer’s office told Aqualantes that metering irrigation wells will not drastically affect farm values. He argued meters increase investment security as the Roswell Artesian Basin is ordered to be metered by Jan 1 1967, with over 2 000 wells to be metered, and he spoke with attorney Jack Russell of the Pecos Valley Artesian Conservancy District.

A M Bunch Announces Sheriff Candidacy

A M Smokey Bunch dep uty sheriff and acting chief deputy announces his candidacy for sheriff subject to the Democratic primary. A Roswell resident since 1938 he has served in the sheriff's department for a year with 16 years as a special deputy and formerly led Walker AFB fire department. He vows to retain current personnel if elected and notes long-time service to the community. He is a Oklahoma native and US Marine Corps veteran. he and his wife Dorotha have two daughters and four granddaughters. He has been acting chief deputy since last November due to Chief Deputy Leroy Carpenter's hospitalization.

Adair Mulls Ways to Put Out Blaze

Oil field firefighter Red Adair expects to decide by Friday how to attack a fierce gas fire near Artesia New Mexico. The blaze has burned since Tuesday fed by up to 100 million cubic feet of gas daily and can be heard for miles five miles from a prior incident. Adair arrived with pumps and equipment and will choose among multiple techniques to extinguish the flames.

Sewing Industry Request Denied by CAP Funding

A Community Action Program proposal for 76000 to establish a sewing industry here was denied after U S Representative Johnny Walker had led CAP officials to expect federal funding. Tex Toys Inc of El Paso planned to run the operation, employing 80 workers for three months before Tex Toys would assume full financial responsibility. Officials blamed the rejection on restrictions against using Office of Economic Opportunity funds for training programs in high turnover industries like garments. Agee of Tex Toys vowed to seek other federal aid avenues, while letters of support from local business and employment figures accompanied the proposal.

Humprey Reports Optimism On Vietnam Policy After Asia Trip

Vice President Hubert Humphrey told congressional leaders at the White House that he returned from Southeast Asia with restrained optimism that Communists can be defeated in South Vietnam and a better life built for the people. Businessmen Tour Chaves County Feed Lots

Five Greyhound buses carried area businessmen on the first annual livestock feeding tour sponsored by the Roswell Chamber of Commerce agricultural committee. Twelve feed lots visited this morning and two this afternoon as about 250 people were served at Hagerman school noon meal. Russell Smith said livestock feeding income in Chaves County exceeds 27 million dollars and that cattle feeding is big business.

Autopsy Finds No Foul Play in Farmington Death

San Juan County Undersheriff J C Cattaneo said a preliminary autopsy report on Mavette R. Rouse age 49 found dead near a car off New Mexico 17 north of Farmington shows no foul play. The body was discovered Tuesday about 100 feet from the vehicle.
