A 1983 opening is targeted, while NMMI officials insist the project remains on schedule. J.C Penney notes uncertainty about a mall location and timing due to high building costs and financing.
Adalee Goodpasture, a United Roswell candidate living at 410 E. 23rd St., outlines priorities including a city employee salary study, possible police service charge funded by public vote, and improved city streets amid concerns about a county jail funding and blighted properties. City Patrolman Tony Fabry collects statements from John Hendricks of 503 Broken Arrow Road after a three-vehicle accident at the Main Street Mescalero Road junction at 8 a.m. today. Hendricks and Leonard Davis of 502 La Paloma Lane were among the drivers involved in the collision.

France fears a hard line could jeopardize detente as Western leaders seek united options beyond Moscow Games.
The defense at the John Wayne Gacy mass sex murder trial opened today following a judge’s dismissal of kidnapping and murder charges in the course of a felony. Firefighters return to duty under a 24 hour truce while negotiators work out a contract. Eric Heiden captured his fourth Winter Olympic gold in the 1500 meter speed skating event with Norway taking silver and bronze.
Glenn Smith dressed as King Cotton was set on fire by disc jockey Jerry Jones during a New Orleans party. Smith suffered second degree burns and was treated at Charity Hospital and released. Jones surrendered and faces aggravated arson and aggravated battery charges as two off duty officers put out the blaze.
