Sunray Oil Corp purchased a 10 year state mineral lease for a large Carlsbad residential zone including North Shore Addition along the Pecos River and Riverside Drive. The bid, $720, was the highest among six bidders at the Santa Fe land office sale. Company officials would not discuss immediate drilling plans though they cited area sediment potential.

Artesia Woman Crushed in Mayhill Road Wreck
A back tire blew on a car seven miles east of Mayhill on State Road 83 causing the vehicle to leave the road and overturn in water. Carrie May Austin 22 Artesia was killed. Three others including driver Robert Lee Williams 34 and passengers James Clay 24 Dorothy Scales 28 were injured. The second crash on U S Highway 85 near Socorro killed three people including a mother and a 4 year old.

A 49 year old Indian man in Roswell faces jail without cash to pay a $15 fine while an oil company plans to pay his family $113 425. Police sought him after a Muskogee lawyer requested his signature on papers. he had been jailed under another name for drunkenness and was later traced to a Oklahoma contact readying the payout.

Navy Flier Dies Voluntarily In Plane Crash Over City
Lt. George Garfield Jeffries of Frostburg Md died saving Lake Charles during a routine flight from Kingsville Naval Air Base Texas to MacDill AFB Florida. With engine trouble he chose to bail at 2,500 feet, then attempted to reach a rice field before a belly landing, dying when the plane crashed near Lake Charles.
