Dr W C Lowdermilk assistant chief of the Soil Conservation Service speaks tonight at 7 30 in the district courtroom about Conquest of the Land a survey based tale of soil erosion through centuries. Slides from Europe Africa and the Near East illustrate land use in the United States and its impact on soil loss. He argues erosion rather than climate drives sterility of North Africa and the Near East and notes terraces in the Holy Land still yield grain. The talk emphasizes erosion control as vital to the US future and prosperity.

J R Brennand an El Paso Texas engineer was rushed by Long Beach police and American Airlines to board the liner America bound for the Canal Zone to oversee a $5 000 000 contract. He arrived as the gangplank was withdrawn.
Belgrade dispatch says Nazi pontoon bridges span the Danube between Romania and Bulgaria and troops move toward Bulgaria. British air reinforcements reach Greece to counter a possible German invasion via Bulgaria as Soviet efforts to halt a Bulgarian entry hint at a tense Balkan crisis.
Fire damaged clothing in a closet at the Co L Harrison residence 108 East McGaffey this morning. Loss covered by insurance. Firemen used a 1 1/2 inch booster hose to extinguish the blaze.
Continental Air lines rerouted both north and south bound flights today due to weather. The planes flew directly between El Paso and Albuquerque, altering the usual route.
Plans to build an east side auditorium at the Roswell museum were reviewed at a Chaves County Archaeological and Historical Society meeting. Architects plans are finished and construction is hoped for soon. The old auditorium would house archae ological and historical exhibits including biographies of pioneer residents. Mrs C E Mason recently elected continues.
Santa Fe reports 194 traffic deaths in New Mexico last year with 1 001 injuries. Total accidents 1 944 include 165 fatals and 1 417 vehicle collisions. Pedestrians injured 113 with 38 fatally. Fifty bicyclists injured and four killed. Of 3 145 drivers, 64 obviously drunk, 34 sleepy, 40 with defects. Most accidents at under 15 mph, only four above 60 mph.

State police and the district attorney’s office pressed the investigation into the fatal beating of 25 year old Chamita mother Sofia Martinez de Salazar. An Espanola coroner’s jury ruled death from head wounds inflicted by a sharp instrument by unknown assailants. Pedro Salazar and three Chamita women were released after questioning. investigators said the case remains very active. Captain A B Martinez led the state police probe and suggested the victim may have been stoned to death.
The New Mexico state highway commission will open contractors bids on March 7 for three road projects with an estimated total of about 300000 dollars. Projects include grading 6.2 miles of U S 85 between Springer and Raton with a bridge over Vermejo creek surfacing 9.4 miles of U S 285 near Canjilon between Tierra Amarilla and Espanola and surfacing 10.3 miles of U S 380 near Lincoln between Hondo and Carrizozo.
Berlin reports 45,000 tons British shipping blasted by German air raiders yesterday. Ten ships affected, three sunk. total loss 11,500 tons. Additional vessel hit off the British east coast. Luftwaffe said heavy damage in Swansea port facilities and Chatham. Attacks also claimed on the Thames defenses and London military targets.
