Santa Fe February 18 AP The New Mexico house rebuked by Speaker White and two members due to lax attendance began to clear the 39th day calendar. A chiropodist bill passed amid jokes about blacksmiths and horseshoes. Albuquerque Journal and New Mexico State Tribune announce a merger forming Albuquerque Publishing Company to publish the Journal in the morning six days and Sunday and the Tribune in the evening six days. T. M. Pepperday named president and general manager.
Santa Fe February 18 AP Speaker Alvan White introduces a bill for a state constitutional convention if Congress submits the national prohibition amendment. Electors to vote in 1934, selecting three dry and three wet nominees. Petitions with 500 names apiece name six delegates. first six win. Governor to proclaim convention after canvass. delegates meet in Santa Fe.
Santa Fe February 18 AP One hundred sixty one true bills were returned by the federal grand jury in session this week. Seventy five no true bill were returned, 272 witnesses examined and 225 cases involving 318 defendants were considered. Indictments will not be made public pending arrests. Most cases were routine including 130 liquor charges.
Twenty five Chaves county residents plan to travel to Santa Fe for a meeting of the State Federation of Taxpayers Association and a tax hearing before the legislature. They aim to present taxpayer ideas rather than compel passage of any tax proposal, while signaling potential attendance to add to the delegation.

Artesia New Mexico officials say two years may pass before normal fruit returns to the Pecos valley as nurserymen report extensive damage from recent cold. Early fruit trees killed, roses and ornamentals damaged, with many trees stripped to trunks. Cherry apples and pears fared better but damage widespread. Assessments ongoing.

Former heavyweight champion James J Corbett died today in New York at age 66 or 67 from a heart ailment. He collapsed in his wife’s arms after a final moment of affection, and she held him as he passed away, smiling briefly as life ended.
Fire destroyed the home of F. V. Hagaman seven miles northwest of Artesia yesterday. No articles were saved from the house and a 200-year-old china set was lost. Insurance covered only part of the loss. fire’s cause was not determined.
A. L. Fields of Animas killed a 146 pound mountain lion yesterday after bloodhounds traced the animal for miles. Fields shot the lion from a tree where it sheltered from the hounds. It marks the third lion killed in the region in the last two years.
