Army Court Upholds Calley Murder Conviction

The Army Court of Military Review today upheld Lt. William L. Calley Jr.’s murder conviction for the My Lai massacre and affirmed a 20 year hard labor sentence. Calley’s lawyer said he will appeal to the U.S. Court of Military Appeals. The court found Calley personally participated in and ordered subordinates to participate in the mass execution in My Lai, Vietnam on March 16, 1968.

Travel writers Stop over here

A group of international travel writers on a New Mexico tour sponsored by the U S Travel Service and the state tourism division visited Carlsbad Caverns and Roswell to study regional sights and cover a feature on New Mexico for major publications. The trip includes plans to observe the international balloon competition in Albuquerque.

International travel writers tour Roswell museum group departs

A contingent of travel writers toured the Roswell Museum and Art Center this morning. The group includes Keith Colquhoun of London, Mr and Mrs Harry McDougall of Toronto, Jack Moro of the U S Travel Writers Service, Mr and Mrs Ramundo Ampudia of Mexico City, and Jean-Erik Linnemann of Paris. They were scheduled to leave Roswell for Albuquerque later today.

Mexican star Lucha Villa performs despite sore throat in Roswell

Mexican film and recording star Lucha Villa sang on stage at the Tower Bar in Roswell despite an extremely sore throat. An audience of 350 to 400 applauded as Raulo de Anda and Los Mariachis de Guadalajara appeared. Villa’s Roswell stop followed a Desert Fiesta show in Carlsbad for about 1,000 fans.

She trained at a California academy becoming the first woman to top her class in a combined cohort of 22 men and 3 women. In Roswell she joins the burglary team funded by a federal grant and is welcomed by Chaves County deputies.

Lincoln area debates restoration of historic Lincoln town

A planning study coordinated by New Mexico agencies gathered about 75 Lincoln residents and officials to explore restoring Old Lincoln and linking sites like Fort Stanton to a statewide plan. Funding comes from a $6,000 Four Corners grant and $2,000 from the National Park Service with local control preserved through a 10‑person contact group.

Brown fights bill to cut tax revenues in Chaves Eddy counties

Rep. Tom Brown Jr. opposes a House bill to cut school county and special tax district property tax revenues in Chaves and Eddy Counties. The bill would rebalance ad valorem taxes at the state level affecting mineral industries, with Bernalillo County slated to gain while Chaves and Eddy would lose. Brown also backs measures on capital punishment, term limits for state officials, school district mergers, and veterinary drug distribution under new acts.
