Water Crop Study Plans Told PVACD

Dr Ralph Stucky of Las Cruces outlined a 60000 four phased study by NMSU to determine water needs for crop production in the Roswell Underground Basin funded by PVACD. Two year project includes Phase I field work and meter installations across Farms near the Artesia Substation with plans for Phase II III IV observations and historical data.

Fair board president Dan Payne announced a one day shift for this year with the fair opening on Wednesday September 28 and Sunday activities starting at 1 p.m. Exhibitors from the New Mexico State Fair in Albuquerque will have more time to return home and ready exhibits.

Senate Recalls Reapportionment Bill From House

The New Mexico Senate voted 24-7 to recall the 53 member Senate reapportionment bill from the House, signaling possible death of any plan and leaving reapportionment to federal courts. The Senate also recalled the tax reform package as leverage against the House, which refused to release tax bills from its committee. Senator Amaya led the recall to allow discussion or a potential substitute by Senator Morgan, who indicated no plan to substitute.

Obstruction Charges Hit NM Senate Over Reapportionment

Senator R C Morgan accused House leaders of obstruction as the New Mexico Senate recalled the reapportionment bill. After arrival back in the Senate, Morgan’s motion to strike all House amendments passed by voice vote. He warned any compromise must be a Senate measure or court action could follow.

A $30,000 survey for the U S Arms Control and Disarmament Agency says New Mexico should emphasize private sector industrial and research work over defense spending, criticizes the state development department, and cites Walker Air Force Base shutdown as evidence of the need for policy changes. It recommends rebalancing priorities, fostering federal state local planning, possible tax exemptions, and selling surplus military plants to aid areas in transition. Taos Wife Killed by Shot in Taos Apartment

Eloise Noble, lifetime Taos resident and wife of former Taos County district attorney Arthur Noble Jr., was found dead from a 22 caliber rifle shot in her Taos apartment. She was in her late 30s. The case is investigated by local police.

Roswell Landman E. B. Todhunter Dies at 57

E. B. Todhunter a Roswell landman and long-time resident died at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center at 1 40 a.m. He was 57 born March 19 1908 in Fayette County Ohio and moved to Roswell in 1937. He worked for Hanson Oil 18 years and previously for Santa Fe Railroad. Survived by widow Irene Kirby Todhunter son Ben Martin daughter Donna Moody sister Mrs W H Milner and five grandchildren. Funeral services tentatively set for Thursday at 10 a.m. Ballard Funeral Home caring for remains.
