Ex Carnival Owner Sentenced to Die in Arizona Gas Chamber
Former carnival owner Carl J. Folk was sentenced to death for the first degree murder of Betty Faye Allen, a 22 year old Pennsylvania mother. The verdict followed a one hour and twenty two minute deliberation by an eight to four jury. Folk showed no emotion as the decision was announced and his wife Mary sobbed lightly. The 56 year old New Mexico man broke into the Allens’ trailer on December 1 and killed Betty Faye Allen after binding her husband Raymond and their 10 month old son Lawrence slept through the night. Superior Court Judge Don T. Udall set the date for the sentence on February 18 at 10 a.m. The state contended Folk planned to rob and kill the family during the break in. The defense urged commitment to a hospital for the insane. This marked Navajo County’s first death sentence since 1899.
