Snow blankets Chaves County as Roswell records heavy snowfall

Snowfall hit Chaves County early Sunday with 4 to 5 inches in Roswell and surrounding areas. Meteorologist Michael Rand of the National Weather Service in Albuquerque notes the snow surpassed the February 2020 county record and typically yields only a tenth of an inch for this month. Roswell officials deployed two salt trucks to treat roads.

New Mexico lawmakers advance gun safety bill S B 5

The House Judiciary Committee approved S B 5 on a party line vote with 7 to 4. The bill would ban firearms within 100 feet of polling sites during early voting and on Election Day and bar carrying near ballot drop boxes 28 days before voting begins until after Election Day.

Paid family and medical leave bill clears committee

A New Mexico House Health and Human Services Committee vote 6 to 4 sent amended SB 3 to the floor for a later House vote. The bill, already passed by the Senate 25 to 15, lowers the maximum leave to nine weeks for calendar years 2027 and 2028.
