Language Leaflet editors publish first paper at Roswell school

Ned Cahoon leads Heights language arts class in publishing Language Leaflet a four page mimeographed paper. Students toured Roswell Daily Record and hosted letters of thanks from Edgewood fifth graders. Tour plans include Berrendo Middle School visits and industrial plant trips in Colorado with stops at Timken and Colorado Fuel and Iron Works.

Bus overturns on snow packed NM road no injuries

SAPELLO N M Twenty San Miguel County school children escaped injury today when their school bus skidded on a snow packed road and overturned State police said the bus driven by George Jose Garcia of Guadalupita skipped on NM 3 outside Sapello north of Las Vegas and overturned No one was injured.

Sunday liquor sales win Senate approval in New Mexico

The New Mexico Senate passed a compromise Sunday liquor sales bill 22 to 20 after two hours of debate overriding a plea for Sunday as a holy day. The bill allows sales 1 01 p m to midnight if a local board adopts the option and permits a referendum to overturn it. A 15 percent tax on Sunday liquor gross receipts was added in a surprise move.

Two Killed In Mishap On Highway

A Roswell man and a Mountainair man died after their car left US 380 west of Carrizozo, overturned several times and threw them from the vehicle. James Davis, 24, of 722 S Sunset, and Michael McKinley, 20, of Mountainair, died of head and internal injuries. Both were employed by the state highway department on the Nogal paving project and had been staying in Capitan. The wreck occurred about an hour before 10 p.m. and the car was found by a passing motorist. The driver could not be determined. The crash was the Carrizozo area’s first fatal accident in four years.

Chamber backs Thiokol proposal to take over DOD division

At a Roswell Chamber of Commerce meeting, Thiokol proposed to assume the industrial development division of the State Department of Development. A three part plan would gather industrial needs data, build a marketable package, and market it nationwide. The deal would run for two years at $200 000 with renewal contingent on performance.

Skeen Seeks HEW Undersecretary Visit to NM

State Senator Joe Skeen plans to request HEW undersecretary visit New Mexico to address Medicaid probe committee. In private meeting, Morgan charged federal standards push nursing home costs up, noting private patient average around 400 dollars monthly due to staffing and building rules. Skeen said federal rules are harming the state and may ask Gov. Cargo to join in requesting the delegation.

Rabies Clinic Set For City Inoculations This Week

Rabies inoculation clinics for small pets are scheduled here Friday and Saturday. Chaves County veterinarians will conduct the clinics from 4 to 7 p.m. at all city fire stations with a reduced rate of 2 dollars per inoculation.
