Moth release aims to curb tumbleweed in California fields

UC Riverside entomologist Dr. Richard Goeden reports imported Turkish moths, Coleophora parthenica, released in melon and crop stands to eat tumbleweed leaves. The program follows hundreds of moths from Pakistan and Turkey, while the Department of Transportation spends $500000 yearly to control the weed along highways, as tumbleweeds migrate from the Middle East into U S agriculture.

Ford pledges energy rebate for farmers in Kansas speech

President Ford told the Kansas legislature he would propose an energy related tax rebate to help farmers and said the farmer would receive the fuel he needs. He ordered drafting of a rebate program to compensate for higher energy costs from conservation and promised details in weeks. Ford met with five Southwest governors and a private session with John Connally amid energy program criticism.

Geyser Appears In Roswell After Tree Work

A city main water line was cut during removal of a dead tree at 1511 W Seventh St in Roswell. Amy Malone reported water backed up into her basement while workers from Eastern New Mexico Tree Service fixed the break and water was restored after several hours.

Roswell considers city takeover of Wherry housing units

Mayor Jerry N. Smith indicates the city is studying the feasibility of owning the 785 Wherry housing units at Roswell Industrial Air Center. A blue ribbon committee will assess viability and talks with New Mexico U.S. senators are planned to gauge support.
