Roswell plans its Crime Stopper program on March 1 to deter crime with anonymous tips. A $3,000 reward fund is sought, with rewards set by an anonymous board and paid to informants who aid indictments.
Six-hundred seventy six high school students registered at Roswell High for the New Mexico Association of Student Councils Convention. Anna Phillips coordinates the event with dances, speeches, caucuses, and a Valentine Banquet and Dance planned across Roswell and Goddard High Schools.
The New Mexico Senate sent to the House bills including a 33 million grocery tax rebate and 16 million more in sales tax authority. Lawmakers delayed pay for 42 senators and 70 representatives still unpaid since Jan 17, while over 100 House staff faced uncertain wages.
Roswell Rep. Colin R. McMillan backed two measures to open juvenile court hearings and classify truants as delinquents, but the House Judiciary Committee voted 7-2 to issue a do not pass recommendation. Debate highlighted philosophical objections to treating CHINS as delinquents and to exposing juvenile cases to publicity.
Virginia Whalen of Roswell, one of two women running in the March 7 municipal elections, seeks a place on Roswell City Council. A Roswell native and Civic activist, she cites unity and civic involvement with support from her husband Tim Kalen.
Bell defended his record at a press conference saying he has done nothing to apologize for and will not be trapped. He noted Samuel Cash remains a likely successor to Marston as attorney general while background checks proceed. The Philadelphia probe into Rep. Eilberg looms as Carter and Bell deny knowledge of the investigation. Republican and Democratic lawmakers offered possible nominees but Bell declined to name them.
