Bush says Geneva Convention applies to Taliban but not to al Qaeda
President Bush affirmed that the Geneva Convention covers Taliban prisoners but not al Qaeda captives. He and officials stressed detainees at Guantanamo Bay are treated humanely under the convention while denying POW status to al Qaeda and Taliban fighters. The move aims to reassure allies and safeguard U S troops, as 28 new Afghan detainees arrive at Guantanamo plus 324 in Kandahar the report notes.
